El Delta del Orinoco, ubicado al noreste de Venezuela comprende una vasta región triangular, cuya base constituyen más de 70 brazos y canales que vierten sus aguas (18.000 /seg.) al Océano Atlántico y cuyo vértice se enuentra en la bifurcación del Río Orinoco, en Río Grande y Caño Mañamo.Desde aquí hasta su desembocadura se van formando infinidades de caños, cañitos y canales que se comunican entre sí, dando lugar a un intrincado laberinto acuático de 40.000 de superficie. Las islas e islotes que surgen del depósito de sedimentos que el río arrastra, están cubiertas en la zona del "alto delta" por un denso bosque húmedo tropical, mientras que en el "bajo delta" cerca de su desembocadura predominan los manglares y morichales

El delta del río Orinoco ingresó formalmente a la Red Mundial de Reservas de Biosfera de la UNESCO, con lo cual suman ahora dos espacios venezolanos de este tipo incorporados al programa del organismo mundial.

VENEZUELA: Orinoco Delta Now a Biosphere Reserve june- 2009

The Orinoco Delta, Venezuela's youngest geological area at just one million years old, has been added to the network of 544 biosphere reserves of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

UNESCO considers the delta "an accumulator of organic material that slows the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere," Environment Ministry official Guido Pereira told Tierramérica.

"Also of value is the presence in that area for the last 7,000 years of the Warao indigenous peoples," made up of some 30,000 people, including fishing and gathering communities that live in stilt houses and travel by canoe through the mangroves of Venezuela's northeast.
